The Imagination Practice: Imagine a world
What if we each practiced imagining what we want to have and create in 2024? I'm imagining more peace, self love, creativity, and democracy, just to start with.
“Imagination will take you everywhere.” ~ Albert Einstein
It seems to me that if there ever was a year to own one’s own imagination, this would be the year.
We are being challenged right now, as human beings on our small beautiful planet, to reimagine what it is possible to create, and how it is possible to live here together. Can we choose a sustainable way of thriving together? Can we reimagine our world to be one filled with peace, love, creativity, and permission to be ourselves?
We have the opportunity to reimagine who we are. To imagine ourselves in positive ways, to imagine that we are capable enough to become what we want, is how we evolve and grow. The more opportunities we have, from birth on, the easier it is to imagine ourselves into a bright future. When opportunity is missing, it’s easier for limitations to take over, and imagination becomes a difficult thing to own for ourselves.
When the economic system in which we live values money and profits over people, wellness, education, art, and the earth itself, our imaginations get squeezed into being smaller than they really are. Our imagination energy is used to prop up systems that do not work for the majority of the humans on this planet.
If our value has been determined by others outside of ourselves to be based on how much money we have, where we are from, or who we know, we may shrink from a lack of choice about what it is even possible to imagine.
We are the ones who can change this, and we are also the ones who must.
When you know your imagination is powerful and valuable, it’s easier to re-own it and use it consciously.
Your imagination is a valuable ability that you’ve used successfully many times already. It’s effortless to imagine, we do it all the time!
An imagination game I play automatically is imagining what I’m making for dinner. Often while sitting at my desk or performing some other task, I imagine the ingredients I have in my kitchen now into a complete dish that I also feel like making. Imagining a delicious dinner is a huge part of having the energy to make it! If you’re the cook at your house, you know that half the battle is coming up with an idea or plan, and that it takes energy to do this. My imagination makes it more fun for me, because I really do enjoy cooking, and I sure do love eating.
We are constantly imagining, all of the time.
The problem is that too often we believe the lies about what it’s possible to have or even imagine having. ‘Reality’ is being defined for us daily on TV, in the news (mostly corporate owned, so whose agenda is controlling what we can imagine?), and from each other.
Also, we humans get really comfortable with what is here now, and often have a tough time clearing it out for what’s not here yet, even if that is a far better picture. We think the only reality is what already exists, and that our imaginations aren’t somehow as real.
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war with reality.” - The Cheshire Cat, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll
One could say that the dystopian future we feared is already here, and so is the start of a different kind of life. The fear that is gripping the imaginations of people is real, and many people seem to be afraid of what 2024 holds in store, not just here in the USA, but on the planet.
It is time to expand our vision on this earth, our vision of what is possible, even if we don’t see it out in front of us just yet.
I’m spending some time and energy re-imagining the future. Won’t you play along with me?
NOTE: Imagination is not about solving or trying to figure out how the new reality comes into being. The key is to imagine, maybe close your eyes, breathe, and just imagine. Even if you do this for only a few minutes a day, you are contributing to a new vibration of what it’s possible to have.
My imagination exercise brought me this today:
Imagine that we as a nation and world spend more money, time, and resources making art than we do making war.
Imagine that we don’t have to justify making this art, not to anyone. Each person who wants to can make whatever it is they want to make.
In my happiest imagination about this, the idea is to create and invent and share with others. That this is the purpose of life, making things that delight yourself and other people, and do not harm either the planet or any living being on it.
I know it’s difficult to imagine that this could really happen. After all, we’ve all been told repeatedly until it’s ingrained within each of us that we cannot have art everywhere just because we want to, who’ll make the money and do the important things?
My answer to that is that in this world I’m imagining, everything anyone wants to create is seen as art. If someone wants to invent and design a new way of keeping track of numbers or items, that’s their art. If someone invents and practices a new form of movement, dance, whistling, or telling stories, that is art too.
The only stipulation is that this art cannot harm or exploit others.
An entire art form that people could learn and practice is the art of debate, non-violent debate, an art which we seem to have forgotten. There is the art of listening, the art of non-verbal communication, the art of talking to the non human creatures on earth. There’s the art of communicating with the earth itself, with the plants all over this earth, an art to seeing the spirit of this beautiful planet.
There’s the art of growing the most delicious and nutritious plants, making the most beautiful gardens, without poison. These arts already exist!
I feel like I’m only getting started with this kind of imagining. Art is good for us, it expands our ability to imagine something other than what has been presented to us as reality, or inevitable, or the way it is.
We could actually decide to view everything we choose to do as an art of some kind or other. Each of us can choose to be the artist of ourselves, to imagine how we can be, outside of what others tell us is true about us, or possible for us.
Everything is and has energy, spirit. One of the most fun things I’ve learned in this lifetime is that energy can be said hello to, it can be consciously experienced, and it can change. Also, that with practice and persistence, one can change a lot of things simply by moving energy about. This is an art form.
Imagination is also energy, spirit.
I’ve written about imagination before, and will continue to do so in 2024. Imagination is happening all of the time, constantly, consciously or not. I hope you will join me in starting to re-own your own imagination, and use it as the powerful tool and ability that it already is. Each of us doing this changes the culture in small but very powerful ways. It might take a bit of time, and it’s worth it.
