Notes on leaving home to find myself
Leaving the city I was born in helped me find my way to the self I wanted to become.
In 2006, I left my comfort zone and moved out of the city I’d grown up in, Chicago. I liked and even loved Chicago, but wasn’t set on living there forever. My husband Noel really really wanted to move to Los Angeles, as he’s an actor and filmmaker. In December 2005, I gave him my blessing to move there first, as he was ready and I wasn’t.
After 9 months of long distance and back and forth between two cities, I joined him in October 2006. Or rather, he and I drove all of our stuff out to Los Angeles together in a Penske, for what was sure to be a grand adventure for us both.
In leaving behind my lifelong home, I now had the opportunity to decide how I wanted to be as an artist and clairvoyant in my new California life. I could decide how I wanted to be seen too, since so few people in L.A. knew me. I didn’t realize this until I got there, but moving freed me up to redefine myself according to me. (I’ve recently had the opportunity to experience this again, with my move to Decatur GA in 2022.)
The years that followed my L.A. move helped me find myself in a whole new way, and learn how to do my art and work, my way.
In other words, I had to leave home to find myself.
I still remember the day I (very nervously) started my first blog on Wordpress. Noel and I lived in a loft in downtown L.A., it was 2007, and I had no idea what to write, I just knew I wanted to. There was so much energy to get through just to share my writing, and so much wanting to do so too! The possibilities of everything were exciting, but I was worried that maybe I wasn’t a ‘good enough’ writer to even dare writing publicly.
At that time, I was building my psychic business on my own terms, and had no idea what that would look like yet. I started finding ways to be seen and attract clients in Los Angeles, and also still had the Chicago clients who I worked with long distance.
Writing is one of the tools that helped me see my way through the fog, to see my way clearly. I already had so many other tools I trusted and depended on - my energy tools and clairvoyant skills I’d been practicing since 1999 were crucial to these new steps I was taking.
Writing was one of the things I’d always wanted to do, but never felt I had permission to do, for some reason. The only way through all of that was to write anyway, so I started my blog. I also wanted to communicate to people, to potential clients and students, about my work and what I was doing. People read blogs, so I wrote and posted. It was fun to find just the right image to add to each post - I wanted my blog to look pretty too.
Now, 17 years later, I’ve written and shared hundreds if not thousands of posts, recorded many meditations, taught classes, podcasted, had 2 radio shows, and painted thousands of paintings.
I still have and create in some of these forms. My goal with this Substack and all of my writing, communication, and art making is to communicate clearly to the people I want to reach, and to offer clear offerings.
My deep spiritual goals with all of this are to inspire others to create something too, and to have as much fun as possible while doing so. As a psychic reader and teacher I will remind you that you are the creator of you. Sometimes all it takes is a hello to have that reminder!
Today I write, teach psychic classes, give clairvoyant readings, create abstract paintings, podcast, make meditation recordings, and generally create something every day. Some days that looks like a big pot of soup, or a clean studio, but to me it’s creating.
I am so different from the me that originally left Chicago all those years ago, but I’m more me than I’ve ever been. I feel like I’m just getting started again with a whole new adventure, and that is really exciting to me!
