Why I am consciously optimistic
Consciousness is awareness. Deciding to be conscious is a choice.
Sometimes it seems like there is no reason to be optimistic, and that choosing optimism is a delusional act.
When you become aware of what's really going on around you, and allow yourself to finally see clearly, it can often seem bleak, at first. What's worse is that you might have to let go of some of your cherished illusions, the ones in which you really immersed yourself.
You may have to destroy old ways of seeing and being, if you want to become fully aware of what’s happening inside of you and around you. Destruction and disillusion are part of becoming conscious.
This can be painful and frightening, which is why consciousness isn’t always easy. It can be difficult to look a painful truth in the face, and acknowledge that what you thought was real, isn’t, and that what you believed to be true, is actually a lie.
Even so, more and more people are choosing to become conscious right now, believing that the truth will set them free. They are expressing their optimism and faith that the truth will help us to create a better world for all.
Optimism is seeing the positive side of a situation. Optimism has faith, trust, and confidence in a positive outcome. Conscious optimism says, ‘yes, I know that it looks pretty bleak right now, it’s hard, unhappy, tough, but I trust that we can find a better way’.
This isn’t ungrounded wishful thinking – this is a conscious choice.
Optimism is a gift of your spirit. Optimism asks, what if? What if we could see each other clearly, and see that we are all beautiful, all needed, all valuable? Conscious optimism says that people are inherently capable of love, and can choose it anytime. Conscious optimism is a creative energy.
Choosing to be consciously optimistic is a revolutionary and healing act. Choosing to see from an optimistic perspective isn’t denying the existence of the fear or pain in the world. You can choose to say hello to what is happening, and then consciously choose a different vibration of energy to match yourself to.
You change the world when you do this. It begins within you.
Sometimes it’s easier to match to the prevailing energy of doom and gloom, the dominant vibration of fear and negativity, and then shrug if off saying, ‘that’s just the way it is’.
No, it isn’t ‘just the way it is’. It’s just the way you are choosing, and you can choose differently. When you match to the deeply rooted unconscious negativity, to the fear, pain, hatred, and invalidation, it’s hard to see that there is a brighter happier way.
The way to heal the world around you is to begin with yourself first.
You always have an effect on others when you do this. You don’t have the power to control how someone else will choose. You can’t decide to heal for someone else, just for yourself. You don’t change the events around you before you change yourself.
When you change you, when you choose to do your work, to heal yourself, your vibration immediately changes, and you start to have an effect on those around you. When you wake up, you help others do the same. They may choose to match to you, instead of to the negativity, fear, unconsciousness, and helplessness.
If you don’t want to know something, you won’t.
Knowing isn’t always the most comfortable thing, since once you become aware of a truth, it’s hard to go back to a place of blissful unawareness. A blanket of unconsciousness can feel protective, but it won’t protect you from what is really going on, underneath the surface.
This state of happy unconsciousness is what is referred to by the phrase: ‘what you don’t know, won’t hurt you’. Having too much information is often seen as a burden. The person who knows what’s really going on beneath the surface can sometimes suffer under the burden of that information.
When people begin to gleam the truth of what is happening in the world, and it goes smack dab against what they think ‘should’ be happening, they might get angry and become cynical about the events they don’t think are fair or right.
Innocence lost, now wounded, these people may descend into despair and cynicism.
It’s only when they embrace the freedom that the truth brings to them, that they can begin to create a new vision for themselves and their world. Maintaining one’s own ability to see the world’s beauty while conscious, without descending into cynicism, is another part of the choice here.
Seeing what is, accepting it, forgiving, and moving on to create another kind of positive energy in the world, is the most optimistic form of consciousness there is.
By healing yourself, you bring healing to the world.
“Optimism is a political act. Those who benefit from the status quo are perfectly happy for us to think nothing is going to get any better. In fact, these days cynicism is obedience.” –Alex Steffen

Resources for optimists and healers
I love the words and work of David Whyte, and am enjoying reading ‘Consolations’. It’s one of those books you can pick up and read one chapter, then come back to again whenever you want. I find myself rereading some of these definitions - though not written as poetry, they are poetic, coming from a wonderful poet.
Jacob Nordby writes some very fun and interesting things down, and shares them. ‘Blessed Are the Weird’ is a lot of fun, and beautiful too.
Have a wonderful week, and thanks for reading!
