Thank you, for being you
You may not realize what a gift you are, simply for existing and being yourself.
Your spirit is unique in all of time, and nobody else can replace you.
Nobody else has ever been just like you. The exact combination of stuff that is you, is one of a kind. Because of this, you don’t really have any competition, and you don’t ever have to be anything but you.
The best part of this is that you get to decide how and who you want to be.
Because you are one of a kind, sometimes it might feel like you don’t fit in with others, and that can lead to feeling invalidated about who you are. Especially if you go through a time in your life when you are growing and changing how you see yourself, and are not quite sure who you are becoming. Maybe you feel like others don’t see you, or you no longer agree with the rules and ideas of a group you’ve been part of. Perhaps you’ve always felt like you were different, and try as you might, couldn’t seem to fit in.
Finding out who you are is why you’re here.
If everything out there seems to be telling you you’re wrong for being you, it’s hard to see that being you is a good fit. So you try to be like others around you, in order to fit in. You find ways to not listen to that longing voice inside of you, that is trying to tell you what your own truth is.
It’s fun to pretend at being someone else, to imagine being another way than we are. That’s one reason we create plays and films and performances and stories of all kinds. We humans need a place to visualize, imagine, and play. To stretch ourselves, re-imagine who we could be. It’s beautiful to see and hear other people’s stories, especially if they inspire us to become more of who we can be, who we want to become.
But when it comes down to it, learning how to be ourselves is what we came here to do. That is the work.
Telling the truth helps you live in your truth.
I watched the SAG Awards this past weekend, which is one of my favorite award shows to watch because it’s all about the actors. My husband is a SAG actor, so watching this together is really fun. This year, Barbra Streisand was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by her peers, and gave a beautiful speech, which you can see here.
This is from her speech, (slightly paraphrased):
“I’ve always believed in the power of the truth… how you can make a profound connection with someone simply by telling the truth.” - Barbra Streisand
Lily Gladstone won an award for her beautiful work in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and her speech was one of my favorite all night. She spoke about the power of feeling and storytelling. See her speech here.
“It’s truly a gift that we get to do this for a living. We bring empathy into a world that so much needs it. It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close off, to stop feeling, and we all bravely keep feeling and that humanizes people. That brings people out of the shadows. It brings visibility.
Thank you to all of the compassionate souls in this room and all of the story tellers here tonight. Keep speaking your truths and keep speaking up for each other.” - Lily Gladstone
In a world that would rather we not be ourselves, feel what we feel, or even know who we are, finding yourself and speaking your own truth is the ultimate creative act.
It is hard to make art of any kind that connects with others and yourself, if you’re not coming from a place of your own truth.
Who you think you are may be vastly different from who you actually are.
If you limit the possibilities for yourself of who you can be, you are selling yourself short. You have the free will to decide to be yourself, or not. It’s fun to play at the many roles you have in life, and it’s even more fun to decide to become yourself.
Once you get to know who you are, and love what you know, you will never be bored a day in your life. By knowing yourself, you become far more interesting for you to be around, and so you will want yourself around a lot more.
Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. ~Dr. Seuss
